Digital Switching Systems, LLC (DSS) is a subsidiary of DNA Group, Inc located in Raleigh, NC, serving customers worldwide in the marine, transportation and industrial markets. DSS’ technology is managed by its omni-BUS software and is by far the most viable and exciting alternative to discreet mechanical switches for controlling electrical power in marine, transportation and industrial applications.
In addition to superior products, DSS provides its customers with world class engineering support and customer service. Its highly trained professionals possess extensive expertise in the areas of electrical and mechanical engineering, efficient supply chain creation, order management and certified project management. Together with its Hong Kong and China-based manufacturer Group Defond, DSS has the resources to meet and exceed customer expectations by offering unique and attractive solutions at very competitive prices.
omni-BUS – the value of open source
Years ago, DSS embarked on an ambitious plan to revamp its products and services based on two principles: open protocol and open source. DSS felt that to be truly Plug and Play it required the embodiment of both principles in its products and software.
In 2007, DSS launched the PowerGate 2000, its first certified NMEA 2000 device. Since then, DSS has advanced the hardware on most of its product portfolio to incorporate the necessary CAN-Bus and NMEA 2000 devices.
But the hardware portion of DSS’ products was only the start. The proprietary messages and software that DSS has successfully deployed for years was no longer capable of meeting the challenges of an open protocol. DSS also realized that they would not be able to keep pace with the innovation in the industry by engineering the entire set of software features in-house. The software needed to be both open protocol and open source. Over the next few years DSS kept their ears to the ground and eyes to the future as it re-wrote its software to become modular and layered to take advantage of industry solutions for open protocol implementation. This has also allowed partners and customers to develop unique features for their applications with open source software.
In 2009, omni-BUS became the product of this evolution in the DSS software. It is both open in terms of how it communicates via CAN-based messages such as J1939 and NMEA 2000 but also open to features and applets that other third parties can develop and implement. ‘Omni’ (meaning ‘all’) embodies the principle of being 'open' and BUS signifies our multiplex, distributed architecture.
Omni-BUS is an open-source application software for managing multiplexed DC power distribution systems. It is available to interface, control, component, and sub-system suppliers to self-certify their devices for optimum performance on the network.
DSS designs and manufactures interface, load controllers, gateways, and related components certified on the omni-BUS network.
